The Mission

The Mission is an incredible movie supported by an amazing sound track and world class actors. This is the official trailer:

It begins with the missionary efforts of the Jesuits to convert the Indians of South America to the Faith. After one of the members of their Order is martyred, Father Gabriel played by Jeremy Irons proceeds to continue the conversion efforts:

The Jesuits efforts are thwarted by the Spanish and Portuguese land owners, and slave traders intent on capturing the Indians. The worst of these traders is Rodrigo Mendoza, played by Robert DeNiro. The efforts of the Jesuits to protect the Indians from the traders puts them in danger and heightens tensions between the Church and the countries of Spain and Portugal.

After killing his brother in a dual over a woman, Mendoza is devastated, refusing food and water. Father Gabriel is sent to help him and convinces him to attempt penance of his choosing.

The most beautiful scene in the movie is where the Indians forgive him:

In a desire to help the Indians, he is instructed to read 1 Corinthians 13, St. Paul’s majestic words on love:

And that’s as much as I can reveal without telling the whole story :)

The Mission is a beautiful, must watch classic.
